A Series of Meetings

Why are there so many meetings? And why are they all terrible? Are we just not trying hard enough? Our facilitators have spent the past year meeting once a week to figure out what is wrong with all our meetings and now, they are ready to share their findings with you at a one-time only, very special meeting- so well planned, so thoughtful, so perfect that it will heal everything that divides us.

I loved this play so much. Reich really has a gift for creating theatre that at times doesn't feel like exactly theatre. Their plays feel like gatherings where actors facilitate profound moments in time for their audience. This play is for anyone that has ever been a part of a bad meeting and wants so badly to know how to make a good one. I'm not sure if I now know how to make a good meeting but I enjoyed going on this journey. Loved the examples and loved moments of audience interaction.

In the audience for this play, I felt the way I do at most meetings--something ridiculous is happening, I'm on the outside (AND inside), surreality is reaching a breaking point and I don't think the people who called the meeting even know why we're here. And (I think) those feelings are completely as Reich intends. Yes, meetings have gotten out of hand. This play too gets out of hand--in a riotous, delicious, laugh-from-the-gut way that helps me reconsider what in heck we're doing together when another meeting gets called...and what I might do differently--laugh, for instance.

Fun and inventive, A SERIES OF MEETINGS revels in upending our expectations of structure before offering a thought-provoking and hopeful ending.

Five main characters in their 20s-40s, diverse in race, and a WIZARD. The wizard doesn't have any lines and can probably be played by your stage manager wearing a fake beard.

For a college production, you could do less character doubling and cast 12 people- contact the author for line changes if you are interested in the large-cast option.
