Carpenter Gorge

by Jeremy Gable

Someone says "ghost",
you think of a spirit,
or some kind of specter,
something close to human.
And they're vengeful or angry,
and that's why they scare you.
‘Cause they want to push you away.
But maybe it’s not like that.
Maybe it’s different.

Few plays are able to create real dread to frighten an audience, but Carpenter Gorge manages it in such a unique and insidious way. It's a gut-punch of the trauma of home ownership and financial strain. The unique script formatting heightens the feel of a ghost story and adds urgency to the characters, making their voices seem like whispers in the dark. And the open-ended stage directions-as-pictograms highlights the trust the author has in any creative team bold enough to take on this horror story with a backbone of all too relatable crises.

The community of National Committee readers for the 46th Bay Area Playwrights Festival advanced CARPENTER GORGE as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We were deeply moved by the play’s investigation of what home means and the grappling with our past to forge a future. We were engaged by the mystery employed in the play and its breaking of traditional forms. We hope this play is considered for further development and investigation, and finds dedicated collaborators in this play’s journey towards production. #BAPF46
