I love the characters in this play, as someone who has worked retail most of my life they are so relatable. The story is touching and allows for diverse casting.

MANAGER – Any age/gender – Store manager, braced for the Christmas season
STUDENT – F, 25 – Graduate student, has worked here for a few years, has taken it upon
herself to help Newbie deal with her first Christmas in retail
FOREVER – 30s-60s, any gender – This employee has been at this store forever
NEWBIE – F, 25 – New employee not yet jaded by the horrors of retail, had gotten very
close to Student over the season
EOM – any age/gender – Employee of the Month, dedicated to doing a good job, but with
a good sense of humor about it

Note:
Student and Newbie (and any of the other characters) can absolutely be played by trans
actors. While I originally wrote Student’s story to be one of coming out as gay to her
family, I realized in production it could just as easily be the story of a trans woman
coming out to her family. As long as the love story is one of queer comfort and joy, I
consider that a faithful reading of the script.
