Recommendations of Ain't the Biggest City

  • Gather by the Ghost Light: Ain't the Biggest City

We produced an audio play version of this script in our season 4 line-up on the Gather by the Ghost Light podcast ( https://www.gatherbytheghostlight.com/s4e9). In "Ain't the Biggest City, Straton Rushing gives us a play of secrets that get revealed gradually, page by page. The mystery lies in the character's intentions for doing what they do and as those motivations are brilliantly unfolded, Rushing leaves the reader wondering what they would do in a similar situation. A fantastically written crime drama! Highly recommended!

Where do your loyalties lie? In a small town in Texas, that question is complicated. My favorite part about this script is how effectively it misleads you. Up until the last minute, I was convinced one character or the other was a "bad guy." In reality, this is a story of two otherwise helpless people doing everything they could to achieve a feeling of justice or karma for a terrible, unnecessary crime. The pacing is riveting and fascinating, and we get the information we need exactly when we need it. I love the ambiguous ending! A really engaging short work!

I had the pleasure of listening to "Ain't the Biggest City" on the Gather by the Ghost Light podcast last week. There's plenty of fun twists and turns to be found here, juicy for actors and audiences alike. I've been a longtime admirer of Rushing's work and he makes a great showing here in this ten minute, pulse pounding play that has you asking "what would I do?"

I just listened to "Ain't the Biggest City" on the Gather By The Ghost Light podcast. Rushing has created a a tense noir drama in which Lane, his heroine's personal sense of justice comes into conflict with her professional duties, and when her conflict arouses the suspicions of Officer McAllen, will it be the long arm of the law that reaches out for her, or the secret handshake of a conspiracy that has its own sense of justice?

What a profound and gripping exploration of the idea of justice. What is justice? How is justice best served? What is the link between justice and vengeance? The stakes couldn't be higher for an EMT facing a moral quandary and the tension ratchets up with each twist and revelation. The final beat leaves us wondering how she finally resolves her dilemma, which is the best sort of suspense. This play received a well-acted and technically adroit production on Gather By the Ghost Light.

Having just listened to this on the Gather by the Ghost light podcast, I am sitting here stunned. Just an amazing production all around. The voice work, the sound design, it's all top notch. But the script itself is a winner from the get go. There are multiple motivations revealed here that give a deeper meaning to this interaction. Both characters have an inner need to see justice done. But there are other considerations of the law vs. justice at play here. There's so much to unpack here. And then, to leave it end the way it does is perfection.

I have just listened to an excellent production of this play on the Gather by the Ghost Light podcast, I suggest you do too.
What starts as a seemingly standard police interview grows darker page by page and we are drawn in to the events discussed, to a point we feel we are being interviewed also.
It is tense, gripping and disturbing, any audience lucky enough to see this staged will be drawn in too.
    Excellent.
