A simple premise provides the backbone for a grippingly well-written play about three relationships evolving into something more complex. I'm such a fan of all three characters Cameron has created here, each lovable and pokey in their own ways. A smart choice for anyone looking for a solid dialogue-focused one act!

With a keen knack for natural dialogue (so many great lines!), Emmet Cameron charts a compelling hour among an unlikely trio that explores what it takes to maintain relationships and when it's too much to ask.

Emmet L.F. Cameron's "Sweet Home" is awkwardly funny but carries a vulnerability that is reflective of one's need for companionship. This play floats effortlessly, allowing the characters to go through their respective journeys without holding back.

Character Information

Much nuance can be introduced to a play by considering a broad range of actors who bring different physical characteristics to the table, along with their unique performances. As readers, we have often been conditioned to picture characters as thin, white, & able-bodied unless specified otherwise. In theatre, we have the opportunity to make deliberate choices to subvert the concept of a human default, which of course does not exist in life. A pretty young woman can be fat. Fathers & their children are not necessarily the same race. These & other facts of life should be just as apparent in theatre, & they need not be mentioned in the text to leave a positive imprint in performance.

When it comes to embodying queer, trans, & nonbinary existence in theatre, the lines of who can play whom can be clear in some areas, murky in others. As a queer, trans, nonbinary thespian, considering the general scarcity of these roles, it does delight me to think of Dee as being written exclusively for actors who hold these identities. But knowing how powerful it can be to embody a role in theatre that you did not yet know felt right to you, I find I cannot hold a hard line on this. So my line is that the actor who plays Dee should understand what it is like to inhabit their body in the world as clearly as the actor who plays Caro understands what it is like to inhabit her body in the world.
  • Caro
CARO (23, she/her) is a recent university graduate. She ordinarily lives in the city but has just spent a weekend at the home of a man significantly her senior who is somewhere between her client & her boyfriend. She has a naturalistic but artfully cultivated femininity, & a Holly Golightly air of being perfectly able to take care of herself, but inviting towards those who fancy themselves helpers. In turn, she is quick to help others, & fiercely loyal once she has formed a bond with somebody, whether in family, romance, or friendship.

  • Dee
DEE (22, they/them) is a philosophy masters student returning to their father’s home for a visit between terms. Maybe masc of centre, but pretty close to centre. Their style is self-consciously casual, a deliberate attempt to play down the gender & the wealth they were raised in. They are chronically scattered when it comes to physical objects, which can come off as carelessness, & have difficulty letting go of ideas, which can come off as moral purism. They make casual sexual connections with ease, but have little patience for casual friendship, to the point of being nearly platonically monogamous.

  • James
JAMES (57, he/him) is a handsome man, spry for his age. Coming from generational wealth, recently retired from a career in finance, happily (albeit not amicably) divorced, & with his only child grown, he spends his considerable free time & money travelling & contributing to environmental causes, & lives relatively modestly when he’s at home. He has a natural charm derived from self assurance, & a much greater need to lavish attention on others than to receive praise himself. Typically an easy man to be around, a difficult man to fluster.
