ROUND YON VIRGIN

When a small-town Evangelical church is tasked with putting on its annual children's Christmas Pageant, kids and adults alike learn some tough lessons about faith, foreskins, and whether the amount of lines you're assigned is truly an indicator of God's favor. Yeehaw!

A truly wonderful piece. The humor is immediately engaging, and Barry gets a lot of fun out of a cast of kids who deservedly act like their upcoming performance is the biggest thing in their lives. The monologues offer great character and comedic moments. Each of the characters is both broadly and finely distinguished. The ending caught me off guard with a moment of beauty and tenderness that is absolutely earned.

A great play for all ages, audiences, and times of year! If you're looking for audition monologues, this play is riddled with fantastic ones. The structure is very fun and so great for theater companies trying to involve many actors while still giving multiple of them a spotlight. The play-within-a-play at the end offers fun and exciting opportunities for the set designer. I appreciate that this can be done super full scale or in a black box. Loved it! 10/10.
