The Maker: A Play on Words

by Dakota Silvey

The play is about labels and the way we perceive them and about society at large who often prescribes them to us. It concerns 3 characters who represent the spectrum of 3 colors and how they navigate labels amongst themselves, each other, and society. They navigate what makes them unique and what unifies them, and come to a realization at the end that asks the audience to question the labels we carry.

A transformative way to show the power of labels and how they affect us. Very creative script to display such a theme. So glad I got to see this play read at the William Inge Theatre Festival!

What are the labels we give to ourselves? What are the labels we give to others? Who or what decides those labels? These are just some of the big questions that are asked in one of the most fascianating and innovative pieces I saw at the 2024 William Inge Festival. This is a thoughtful play that gives audiences something to think about, actors big scenes and big emotions to play out, and designers big ideas to create. Highly recommended

Silvey tackles the idea of labels in a fascinating way with this inventive piece of theatre. I saw a reading of this play at the William Inge Festival, and it gave the audience a lot of thoughtful things to chew on. Actors and designers are sure to feel the same way. There's chances for everyone to get some good creative work in with this one!
