←Recommendations of I Don't DO Holidays

It doesn't matter who you are, what you believe, or how much ritualistic murder your community commits - the holidays are stressful for all of us. That's the central insight powering Daniel Prillaman's glorious, gonzo comedy I DON'T DO HOLIDAYS, a terrific piece of holiday satire that teaches us, among other things, that the words "Midsummer Solstice Harvest" are an absolute blast to say.

Daniel Prillaman creates a brilliant piece of comedy that has you questioning tradition and its role in society and our lives. What I love about Prillaman is how aware they are of holiday fever and those who just can't get behind it. I think this play is really great at highlighting both sides of the argument and letting readers live in this world.

Rapist Pillager Discovers Land Already Discovered Day had me laughing out loud.

If you are like me and you have a complicated relationship with the holidays, much of what Veruth says will ring true. If you are a holiday zealot (no offense intended) you might see yourself in Piotr. If you are a thinking person, you will appreciate the dark satire Daniel Prillaman serves up with a delicious side of comic violence. The connection between the characters and the authentic desire to come to some mutual understanding gives the play unexpected emotional resonance too. Just read it. It's brilliant.

So funny! A play that explores what goes through the head of a side character in a horror film, to hilarious effect! And the ending is SO Scandinavian! With the resurgence of the film this is based on recently, this would be a great addition to an evening of horror shorts!

Clearly inspired by a certain folk horror movie which many regard as genius (I'm sure they're all #TeamPiotr) and others like me view as a masterpiece of unitentional comedy, Prillaman turns the central event (and delicious details) of that story into an purposely hilarious domestic comedy!

The dialogue is stifled to perfection, The characters are divinely deadpan, evoking Scandinavian pathos to a poetically absurd degree. There's also a cavalcade of WTF moments that must be experienced to be believed!

A glorious wild ride in the midnight midsummer holiday sun! Sacrifice be damned!

Well, this is just a wonderful serving of divine madness. Somewhere between the emptiness of an over commercialized of a holiday whose celebration creeps earlier and earlier each year and the sacrifices we make to show how devoted we are to our cultural observations of said holiday there is room to have a meaningful discussion with a loved one about how they feel about any given holiday. Prillaman manages to Prillaman as only a Prillaman can Prillaman. Prillaman!

Very funny dark comedy that uniquely skewers the "joys" of the holiday season. How I would love to hear Prillaman's Piotr and Veruth!

Well, that escalated at the speed of sound. Daniel Prillaman's humor is generous and broad at first -- parodies of movies and history/culture -- then turns dark and sharp, like a steel-bladed knife. You needn't hate holidays to love "I Don't DO Holidays," but remember to duck.

As I write this five days before Christmas, I can only feel comradeship with Veruth in her dissatisfaction with the holidays of her culture. And ours, apparently, even though Prillaman gives them names much more appropriate than our traditional ones. The words he gives his characters, and the order in which they speak them, make the darkness of the situation glide along on a constant trickle of amusement. And then when Santa shows up, well, who knew the devastation one small but well-aimed teacup could cause. The play is imaginatively conceived and wonderfully executed and funny as heck.

Daniel Prillaman's "I Don't DO Holidays" exposes the absurdity of the season — well, ALL seasons, really — with memorable characters, clever dialogue and a climax that drives home the point of this play in a way you won't forget. I loved it.
