Persephone & those 6 little red seeds have been speaking to the complex intertwining of femininity, food, & other appetites for millennia now, & Aly Kantor's 10 minute entry into this conversation is deeply in touch with the past while bringing a thoroughly contemporary perspective to this infinite conversation.

Based on Greek mythology, this play is powerfully grounded in modern "feminine mythology." The faerie tales we tell ourselves to be more desirable and attractive to a potential partner. Persephone is very much into Hades, but terrified to admit and/or advertise who she is and what she wants. Her Hunger hilariously speaks the truth while teasing "Ooh, daddy, I’m going to ignore my basic needs in favor of yours, get caught in a vicious cycle, and then wonder why I’ve never had a satisfying relationship in my life.” Brilliant and totally important play for women today.

A reminder that if you’re hungry, just eat the dam**ed food. A beautiful foreplay of food expectations and love/lust. They go together. Like a horse and carriage.

What fun! The first date interplay is perfect and I could almost taste the pomegranate! Well written dialogue and a fun, tasty story! Brava!

This terrific ten-minute play takes on such an important topic and does so with great wit, intelligence, and theatricality. This would be enormous fun to perform and to watch and will also get audiences thinking. So well done!

Refreshing and satisfying, Kantor brings her brilliance to a myth riff date night between Persephone and Hades. The personification of Hunger is delightful fun as a reader, so I can only imagine the joy an actor and audience would find in it. Alongside the comedy is biting commentary on all that women of any age must constantly balance in order to be deemed “inoffensive.” Dread Queen of the Underworld? [Insert Lucille Bluth “Good for her” GIF here].

This short, comedic play is an excellent example of "Protagonist v. Self" conflict. I love the humor, I love the underlying romance, I love how empowering the story is. Just terrific work by Aly Kantor.

Damned if this play didn't make ME incredibly hungry reading it. Definitely don't read this on an empty stomach, folks, as Kantor will torture you with exquisite description of food, glorious food. But that's one of the points here, innit? Beyond that, an inventive use of Greek mythology to explore some very modern issues such as female body image, male expectations, etc. That being said, this is no rote "After Socrates Special." The twists and turns as you go through the play are enjoyable indeed, and the ending is indeed satisfying in many ways, carnal and culinary.
