  • H. Avery: The Disturbance

Eerie and dark, this play sparks a conversation about who is entitled to land, and why? A great two-hander that would fit in nicely with other short plays that pack a punch.

While the content within THE DISTUBRANCE was once seen as strictly fiction, too many of these stories have become reality for far too many, making Debra A. Cole's play even more of a gut punch. The banter flows, the imagination ignites, and you're left wanting more.

  • Tom Erb: The Disturbance

A gripping drama that explores into the unforeseen challenges of homeownership. Debra A. Cole’s The Disturbance either its minimalist stage and a focus on intense dialogue, this play captures the rain intense emotions of a young couple facing their dream home’s occupation by squatters. It’s a compelling story that speaks to the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity. A thought-provoking piece.

Holy cow, do I want a sequel to this play. Deb Cole, you can't tease us with that opening salvo and then leave it to us to imagine what comes next. I couldn't possibly come up with anything like what I suppose you already planned out. This was terrifying and all-too-plausible in this day and age. Is there ANYTHING more horrifying to a homeowner than the words "squatters rights"? RIGHTS?!!?! How dare they? And yet, It's happened. Here though, we have a chance to see the squatters get what they deserve. Sequel, sequel, sequel...

"The Disturbance" definitely lives up to its name. We're moving along briskly, flowing with the captivating dialogue volley Debra A. Cole does so well... tension is building... and BAM, we're hit in the senses with a few lines you can actually see and smell. Oof. By then, I'm in it with them. I need them to win too. And I'm left wondering how far I'd be willing to go. Absolutely gripping, gut-wrenching, and thought-provoking... Bravo!

Now I’m disturbed! Deb Cole takes a situation that occurs too often and presents it with all its maddening frustration. Who wouldn’t be tempted to take extreme measures? That, and the laws that allow this kind of situation in the first place, are prime topics for follow up discussions. Make it happen!

I could definitely see this as the preface, if you will, of a bigger play. Or a film. Or . . . how about if we let this short, incisive work stand on its own. As it is. And just leave the audience wanting more. And guessing what in the hell happened next. Obsessing over it, even. The power of this piece is clearly in what isn't said or shown. Nicely done!

This is ripped straight from the headlines. It's a frustratingly true scenario and as audience members we can only hope David and Chloe get their lives back. This would be a great play for a talkback session!

Oo, this was a really good set up! I have family members who have been through similar situations as described here, so everything rings true (unfortunately). An all-too-common problem these days for landlords in certain states. If this work leads to something else, can't wait to see it, but in the meantime, just this 10-minute sets the stage very effectively and leads to quite a bit of pathos for the characters in a short burst. Definitely recommended!

Ok, now I want to see how this ends! Owning a home is such a dream for so many people and to have the kind of nightmare you hear about here, you can't help but feel for Chloe and David. Like so many of Deb's plays she draws you in from the word go, sprinkles in little bits of humour and intertwines it with characters and captains the whole ship with characters you can't help but feel for. Masterfully done and offers great performance opportunity with inexpensive set and props, a festivals dream right?
