THE GODDESS OF BRAN MUFFINS (10-minute play)

by J.S. Puller

Extra, extra! This just in, the Greek gods are real. And while her male colleagues are lining up big-time interviews with Zeus, Apollo, and Poseidon, Joanne Michelson is stuck interviewing the goddess Demeter, or, as she prefers to call her, the "goddess of bran muffins." But Joanne might be getting more than her low, low expectations would suggest.

Joanne Michelson wasn't counting on the "plant lady" of the gods to be such a thrilling interview, but humans have wrought on themselves a goddess who is not only a queen of abundance, but also fired-up vengeful over their offenses. The play Puller has written technically ends here in-text, but the ethical ramifications the playwright digs into are thought-provoking a while after, and definitely suitable for all ages.

What happens when Demeter - aka Mother Earth - gets fed up with humanity and decides to reveal herself to the world? This unexpected short explores a heart-felt warning to humanity about the error of our ways and the consequences of underestimating a woman. I particularly enjoyed how Demeter subverts all of Joanne's expectations, both in the importance of her role in Greek mythology and just what she has to offer for an interview.
