The Wizard of Oz is a story that means a lot to me so I was very intrigued by the title and synopsis of this play. I never thought I needed a story about the Tin Man's offspring but Gordon has proven me wrong. It's a play that stays connected to the source material but is wholly it's own. I loved how this play looks at queer identity and society's obsession with convincing people they need to be perfect. Some important lessons are learned but nothing about this play felt didactic. I needed a play like this to read today.

TINA: 15, she/her, a tin girl, the Tin Man’s daughter
RAIN: 16, they/them, a sorcerer, knows their worth to the max, fiercely loyal
BEAU: 17, he/they, transmasc, a human, a handyman’s apprentice with a heart of gold
WANDA: early 40s: she/her, a human, the Wizard’s daughter, eccentric, girlboss vibes

* The actors who play Rain, Beau, and Wanda become Offstage Voices 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The actor who plays Wanda/Offstage Voice 3 is welcome to use the voice-altering microphone mentioned in the script for the many different character voices that they do in this play.

NOTES ON CASTING: Beau and Rain must be played by trans, non-binary, and/or gender non-conforming actors. Tina and Wanda may also be played by trans, non-binary, and/or gender non-conforming actors. While I wrote all of these characters with specific pronouns, their gender identities can and should be adjusted depending on the identities of the actors playing them. Lines can also be edited accordingly due to any changes to the characters’ identities. Actors of color can and should play all of these roles, with attention and empathy paid to how the casting of the piece will affect the piece. It’s definitely a plus for the actor playing Wanda to have some voice-over experience.
