Recommendations of Bum Bum, or, this farce has Autism

  • Jacqueline Goldfinger: Bum Bum, or, this farce has Autism

Rarely does a play make me laugh this hard, but also mean so much. Osmundsen is a vibrant and exciting emerging playwright whose play leans into the absurdity of modern life through the lens of a wide-range of characters and perspectives.

I had the pleasure of watching a recording of BUM BUM and came away from the experience with a profound sense of hope — hope for a world, a cultural landscape where autistic artists, dancers, comedians, PLAYWRIGHTS get to be themselves, uncensored, unsanitized, and unapologetically so. Dave Osmundsen is at the forefront of what theatre is and can look like. BUM BUM, OR, THIS FARCE HAS AUTISM is funny, profound, and deserves to be seen by audiences all over. Produce this play!

Your actors are going to love rehearsing this. And they will find it hard to stop laughing.
There are many plays about antics and shenanigans of theatre making behind the scenes, but never one about a telethon for Autism.
This play does something that many plays don't, it develops ALL ensemble characters equally, lets them shine. And the SPEED, moment after a moment, a whirlwind of jokes, burlesque, ventriloquisim and plenty to say about being autism.
    This deserves many productions!

Love this play! Saw it at HERE and fell in love with the characters and their hijinks. I could have spent all day with them. Very funny and a great farce. I hope to see it part of theater seasons all over the country. Highly recommend!

  • Emma Goldman-Sherman: Bum Bum, or, this farce has Autism

Osmundsen's farce is so much fun! I saw it at HERE where the crowd was in stitches over the hilarity (it's a blast because the characters are so well written), the hijinks (it's wonderfully eventful) and the heartfelt honest lessons of the play are earned. How hard the autistic characters have to fight for their autonomy, with so much at stake, the play offers big lessons about ableism while being theatrical, surprising, sexy and funny!

With Bum Bum, Osmundsen deftly creates a compelling story with a great message and so much heart. Oh, and also it's funny. Osmundsen walks the line between heartfelt meaningful theatre of change, and getting people to laugh at the absurdity of ableism, a tight rope not easily navigated, that osmundsen pulls off with grace. Not often does laugh inspire change, but here, I think, it must.

  • Alexander Perez: Bum Bum, or, this farce has Autism

Osmundsen takes aim at well-meaning allyship in this madcap farce. Between censored stand up routines, missing iPads, and the looming impact of exposing one’s Bum Bum, the play finds space to connect audiences to the real frustration behind stifled autistic voices in supposed advocacy spaces.

  • Danielle Wirsansky: Bum Bum, or, this farce has Autism

Bum Bum is a brilliantly funny farce that takes on the infantilization of autistic adults with sharp wit and bold characters. Lisa, Sean, and Jason’s hijinks at the telethon are not only hilarious but also deeply meaningful, making this a standout comedy with an important message of authentic expression.

  • Aly Kantor: Bum Bum, or, this farce has Autism

This fabulous farce is a battle cry for equity, making a case for ending the infantilization of autistic adults...and it's freaking hilarious! I was a particular fan of Sean, whose experiences resonated with mine, and who boldly "said the quiet part aloud." And staging the "bum bum" is going to be the highlight of some director's career! It features great roles for both autistic and allistic performers, including one particularly hilarious role for a non-verbal performer! SO funny & memorable!
