Set in a small lakefront community outside of Charleston, South Carolina in 1971, The Low Country tells the story of a young girl, Hallie King, who has come to live with her grandparents after her mother has taken off with a strange man for the summer. On the day of her grandparents 50th wedding anniversary, the workers of the town’s hydro-electric power plant are on strike. Among these workers is the husband of Corrina Johnston, the family's housekeeper. Throughout three acts spanning a 24-hour period, the characters are forced to either bolster or abandon their own belief systems that have held them so firmly thus far. At its heart, the play explores loneliness and belonging through the eyes of characters on the periphery of society.
