Recommendations of Early One Evening at the Miskatonic University Ladies Auxiliary Book Club

  • Brent Alles: Early One Evening at the Miskatonic University Ladies Auxiliary Book Club

10/9/24: Very funny scenario here as a ladies' book club meets Lovecraft with perhaps unsurprising but very humorous results. Loved the byplay between the characters and the touches of horror are still effective as well. Very good horror comedy 10-minute!

Fast and funny with just the perfect amount of horror…and an all female cast!

The premise draws you in and the play doesn't disappoint! Fast-paced comic writing that always stays one step ahead of you, and drastically heightens at just the right moment.

Oh, John Busser! I made the mistake of reading this in public and now people are wondering what I'm laughing out loud about. The Pandora story remixed with comedy and fantasy and horror. Great dialogue, terrific acting opportunities and a fantastic story that must be seen. This would be an excellent short piece for a horror festival! Well done, John!

Oh, what a laugh out loud delight! This non-stop, character-driven comedy would be a blast to stage, with banter coming fast! While easily produced, there is just enough room for clever designers with a love for the macabre to have a field day with makeup and lighting! The setup is subtle and familiar, which makes the supernatural pay-off feel even more rewarding. Plus, the audience won't have ALL the fun. I'm not sure there is a role in this that wouldn't be a BLAST to play!

I must admit I'm with the women of the book club on the subject of horror literature. But, that being said, I loved the repartee and Lavinia's sudden channeling of the figures of terror. A really fun read even for those of us who've never read Lovecraft.

A book club unleashes unspeakable terror upon the world in this devilishly delightful laugh riot from John Busser. Pass the crab dip!

I'm a sucker for anything Lovecraftian, so I was hooked from the synopsis. Busser kept my interest with some dialogue and character dynamics that would rival "Steel Magnolias", and delivered on the punchline through the classic trope of "book-club-but-not-actually-really-more-of-a-wine-club" club. Well worth a read and I'd pay money to see this onstage.

A delightful, Lovecraftian lark! I love how this is both honoring and poking fun at horror literature and those who choose to read such darkness!

Grab some toast and butter because this is my JAM! Busser boldly stomps around Arkham with unabashed glee. I love playing with the mythos and this play is a true delight!
