SHORT PLAY. An autistic young man (and lifelong Twilight Zone fan) is undergoing another surgery to "fix" him. But a visit from a personal hero may be the cure he needs.

9/22/24: An interesting rumination on identity, neurodiversity, and the burden of dealing with those issues and so many more in life. As usual, Donley does an excellent job of giving us an alternate reality that allows us to confront our actual reality from a sideways glance. A thrilling monologue begins this piece and then allows for a neat bit of dialogue between the Young Man and the titular RFS alluded to in the title. A great little piece of theater here, to be sure.

For autistic creatives, or anyone who has been judged for being passionate, this play hits home something fierce. Ian Donley captures the debilitating cost of ableism, of attempts to pathologize difference, and confine special brains into normal boxes. "rod f**king serling" is a funny, sad, sweet, and exciting piece of theatre.

I watched "The Twilight Zone" when it originally aired, and I remember thinking, before I watched it, that it was a horror series with monsters and such. In truth, and as Ian Donley makes it very clear, it was nothing like the "chewing gum for the eyes" that Frank Lloyd Wright called TV of the time. It was the most honest depiction of the human condition with all its faults, and a refuge for those of us who knew exactly how the Young Man felt, and who knew who the real monsters were.
