Recommendations of Mother's Day

  • Katherine Vondy: Mother's Day

We start out watching a grounded but knife-sharp satire, and by the end we're in a delightful land of heightened absurdity that crosses a medieval courtly fairy tale with some hilariously horrifying injuries. Which is to say, MOTHER'S DAY offers quite a ride during its ten minutes! So much fun for everyone watching--and creating--this show!

  • Annie Considine: Mother's Day

I saw this piece read at the Midwest Dramatists Conference and it was one of the most entertaining works I saw. The Uber Mom was a brilliant construction of an antagonist and dialogue between her and the "normal mom" character was hilarious. The medieval kids store environment surrounding them ("Kid Kingdom") was also magical and The Fool trying to help them had some awesome one-liners. I had an incredibly entertaining, absurd time.

I saw the reading at the Midwest Dramatists Center and started laughing during the character descriptions and setting. Even before the first line of dialogue I was all-in for a wild ride. And a wild ride it is. Uber Mom is a terrific take on the type of character who always knows better (but really doesn't). The Fool is a great take to make the third character in a short play interesting. The playwright keeps taking things further until she breaks through to a truly wonderful absurd conclusion.

This play had me at "Medieval-themed children's store" and then leapt into the comedic stratosphere with unbridled insanity. The relentless one-upmanship and defensive deflection between the moms is as brutal as any nature documentary. The double standards and warped priorities of a society waging war on women are blitehly eviscerated, and the store's retail "Fool" provides perfect comic counterpoint.

The play is also a gift to costume/prop designers who get to pull out all the... um... stops.
