Esto También Pasará

by Jessica Mayer

After a game of Battleship, Charli tells her younger brother Frankie that he is grounded and is not allowed to leave his room for the rest of the night. They argue about fairness and their relationship until it is time for Frankie to decide if he’s ready to see what is happening outside of his safe bedroom.

10/3/24: Bilingual plays help to preserve the nuance of specific cultural experiences while getting at the universal, and Esto También Pasará is a shining example of that in the short form. Anchored by a game of Battleship, this beautiful, heartbreaking story about a sister trying to protect her brother from the harshness of reality would be a great fit for any ten minute play festival. Audiences are in good hands with playwright Jessica Mayer!

A heart-wrenching look into domestic violence from the perspective of children. I saw this at the Midwest Dramatists Conference and found it a chilling piece that stayed with me. The dialogue switches between Spanish and English were masterful (I don't speak Spanish and I believe I understood almost every word), and the helpless attempts of the sister to protect her brother from the violence were heartbreakingly crafted. The battleship metaphor beneath everything was a great touch. Loved this.

Beautiful and heart wrenching and important. An exploration on domestic violence through a lens of siblings. Poignant in its approach of this difficult theme and hard conversation. A short, but complete, story that lingers on the mind of the reader and leaves them continuing the conversation long after they're through
