"Moving is like a heart transplant. Don't do it unless you have to."
I Am An Island takes place on an island that is sinking into the sea, but no one will leave… except for May, who is trying to convince everyone to go. But they won't listen: not her twin sister, her fiancé, or anyone else. The ghost of May's grandmother just haunt-mocks her while drinking martinis. The island is a wonderful place to live, with monthly celebrations and centuries of history right under their feet. People are happy there. They would rather chase ostriches and build floating gardens than acknowledge sleeping in puddles.
But then May starts sinking herself. She can't seem to make herself move, getting lower in increments. When an unexpected visitor from the mainland arrives and mistakes May's sinking for a political protest, she decides that sinking herself is how she will start the revolution she wants, that will get her community to safety. She has no other choice.
Poetic, playful, and pressing, this modern myth asks: how do we stand on a sinking world and maintain hope?

I Am An Island

Recommended by

  • Len Cuthbert: I Am An Island

I Am An Island is a beautifully imaginative and deeply human play that balances humour and heartbreak with remarkable ease. Julia Lederer creates a vivid, theatrical world that feels both whimsical and urgently relevant, exploring connection, denial, and survival with clarity and compassion. It’s smart. Looking forward to seeing it when it opens at the Here For Now Theatre in Stratford, ON
