Berry's work is so distinctive. He has such a unique way of thinking that he brings to every piece that is equal parts absurd and achingly genuine. This piece starts out utterly ridiculous, a total laugh-out-loud comedy, and ends in a tragedy straight out of Shakespeare. Seeing this fully staged would only heighten these juxtapositions! Would be an amazing piece for a company with an wacky yet caring identity.

Max has this little trick in his writing where it goes joke, joke, joke, something-actually-really-poignant-that-makes-you-think-and-maybe-even-makes-you-cry. It gets me every time, and this play is FULL of those moments. This play hits. This play is a real romp. This play would be so fun to stage. Someone should do that!

The brilliance of Berry’s work is he lures you in with a wacky high-concept idea, makes you fall in love with these characters and the love they have for eachother, and then utterly destroys your world -- all while one of these characters is fully Walrus God. Brilliantly pondering existentialism, the juxtaposition of love vs belief, and the ways one can be pleasured with Walrus tusks. Do yourself a favor and give it a read (or maybe a production??).
