Recommendations of The Rink at the End of the World

  • Lainie Vansant: The Rink at the End of the World

I had the pleasure of seeing a reading of this play via GPTC and it was perhaps the most lovely way to experience my existential dread about... well... everything. While we start off thinking we understand a new play about athletes who are also teenage girls, this story twists and turns in fantastic ways. The stage directions are evocative and exciting for me as a director, and I would die for Amanda. Oh my goodness, that girl.

  • Steve Harper: The Rink at the End of the World

Competitive skating, teen angst, jealousy, divorced parents, COVID, armegeddon and more (yes, more!) collide in Megan Tabaque's playful and profound drama / comedy. With a host of characters, children and adults, and a series of locations from a skating rink, to an airport to Iceland, Megan manages to keep all the balls in the air in this enjoyable play about what it means to be young, alive, confused and facing the frailty of human life. Sharp, funny and completely absorbing.

  • Rachel Borders: The Rink at the End of the World

Megan brings together humor and thought-provoking discourse about the fragility of our world. As a former skater myself, there are so many nuggets to tickle someone who knows skating, but there is also no barrier to entry for those unfamiliar. It weaves creativity and movement together beautifully and is able to accomplish a world much larger than its 8-person cast. Watching Megan develop this play was a joy. I know audiences will fall in love with this team of teenagers.

If you see this title on a marquee or in your "tickets now available" inbox, grab your seat now! What a ride. Tabaque combines biting humor with gravitas, infusing various, inspiring styles of dramatic writing to a piece that takes us in directions we never saw coming...but maybe should have. This rink, and the girls skating around it, through it, and above it, will undoubtedly leave you chatting in the lobby and taking a deep look at where we've been and where we dread we might be headed.
