Recommendations of Ice in Their Veins

  • John Busser: Ice in Their Veins

12.19.24 - Forget serial killers, homicidal maniacs and psychopaths: teenage girls with grudges are the truly scariest things on Earth. And never has that been portrayed in more howlingly funny fashion than Aly Kantor's scathing look at competitive ice skating and skin care. The characters are biting, the plot a sadists delight, and the jokes fly by faster than the skaters do. With jabs at social media and facial cleansers galore, there isn't one page of this script without a funny as hell line.

I ADORE the cringe of this play! This is a powerhouse piece for young performers. I wish I was young enough to be in it...maybe if it were animated? But I digress. Absolutely hilarious with quick and snarky dialogue and delightful moments of physical comedy. Every role is a gem. This will be the talk of the school! In a good way!

"I, Tonya" does not capture the cutthroat world of competitive ice skating one-tenth as well as "Ice In Their Veins." The skaters in Aly Kantor's play are brutal, selfish, cruel and side-splittingly funny. The Machiavellian Stevie has enough ambition and malice to chase her dream of a championship, but those same traits stand in the way — to say nothing of a less-talented sidekick and a perpetually fainting rival.
This is a great play for young performers, and a riot for audiences.

There is nothing in this world more savage than a teenage girl. I love this dark comedy about the cutthroat world of solo ice dancing. Every character is so distinct, and also such an outsized blast in her own unique way. There is so much to love, but I think my favorite recurring joke is the constant stressing of how slight Galyna is. What a gift this play is for five teenage performers, and what a treat for an audience!

Kantor takes a Secret Santa title, begins with chaos, delightfully, and then descends into further chaos, even more delightfully, spinning pure magic all the while. This would be a dynamic play for five strong young performers who are just itching to play on the dark side, which ultimately in the end might just wind up being the light side ... for the most part. Savage and true. A tour de force, a triumph "for the girlies."
