Clay Mommy follows a trans girl named Violet who quits sex work and moves home with her estranged religious mother. Violet’s mother tries desperately to reconnect with Violet but cannot get past her transphobia and self-absorption. Violet meets an old family friend who is beginning to transition as well and tells the friend, despite their protests, that Violet will be their mother and guide them through their transition process. Unsure how to mother, Violet creates a sculpture of her grandmother and brings it to life as a golem (a giant clay creature from Jewish folklore). The golem-grandma begs to be destroyed as being trapped in a clay body is incredibly painful but Violet refuses and forces her to help her become a mother. Despite the inclusion of cisgender characters, this play has an all trans-femme cast. Men in the play are portrayed by puppets.
