Ice House

SHORT-PLAY (10 pages): Two old friends contemplate life choices in a wooden shack on a frozen lake in the Northwoods. One is hiding as his daughter waits for him to walk her down the aisle on her big day. The other dispenses advice and not so subtle pressure while drinking beer, eating beef sticks, and filling the shack with the pleasant and calming odor of male flatulence.

Ice House by Acorn Hayes is a clever, quirky gem. Two old friends, a little beer, and a lot of unspoken tension make for a hilarious yet poignant look at life choices. Hayes brings the characters to life with witty dialogue and touches of heart, making you care about their paths even in this short time. A fun, deep dive into friendship and regrets.

This is the second piece I have read from this emerging playwright and I want to say for the record that both plays are impressive. What he does in a short amount of pages is wonderful. His characters well drawn, the dialogue is clever if not quirky, and the storytelling is simply terrific. Acorn, you’re on to something. Keep it up!
