The careful melding of fantasy with reality in this play is so deftly calibrated that I find it astonishing at times. We are confronted with a difficult and unaccepting real world, but the depiction is balanced with the delicate magic of Nico's reality, which he is unable to express but which we hear. I love how Nico's understanding of the life of the sea adds subtle commentary to what he understands happening in his family unit. The ending is pure magic, earned and immensely rewarding.

Jillian Blevins is a wonderful writer and this play is beautiful. I had the great honor of being in the opening night audience for the workshop production at Phillips Mill in New Hope, PA. I love the juxtaposition of heightened, stylized language exploring the neurodivergent brain and imagination with the grounded family drama realism. All three characters are very well-drawn on the page, which I suspect allowed for the actors and director to go wild and create a gripping evening of theater!

If MORPHOLOGY were simply a domestic drama, a look at the realities of both living as and caring for a teenage boy on the spectrum, it would be still be sensational. But Blevins is up to so much more here, devising a unique language for the nonverbal Nico built from scientific obsessions and iambic pentameter - dovetailing beautifully with his mother's personal history, and suggesting some incredible new culture to come, if only we're willing to accept it. Raw, heart rending, and magnificent.

The honesty in this play is staggering. It's made even more raw through moments of direct address, in which the loneliness of these characters is revealed through subtext, hidden in the spaces between whale and literature facts. It couldn't be more effective as a play about communication, encouraging audiences to learn forward and search for what isn't being said. Ripe with gorgeous language and specific dialogue (much of which is in verse), it's also a treat for designers craving a challenge!

Words alone are a poor means of communication. We need connections beyond sound, and in this touching and powerful play, Jillian Blevins uses the telepathic link between a mother and her non-verbal child that not only conveys their thoughts but their love in both directions. Nico's world and his fascination with life underwater speaks so much about how simple moments of silence are as important as anything said out loud. This is a wonderful look at a world built on love.

Jillian is the most the versatile playwright I've encountered on NPX. And she always delivers. "Morphology" is a staggering script, and a profound, mentally re-arranging reminder that love transcends language. There's (pun very much intended) so much to dive into beneath the surface of this play, from the tenderly treated subject matter to the language shifts and flow, this is another perfect example of a timely, important story that only theatre can tell. This one is thunderous.

The language in this play about a single mother and her autistic son is gorgeous!! I love the messy relationships and the deep sea facts and how all the seemingly unrelated details sprinkled throughout come together at the end in ways surprising and wonderful.

"Maybe he's just different. Something new." These words stick in my heart, one small piece of the magnificent puzzle that is Morphology, a new full length play from the masterful Jillian Blevins. Deploying her gifts of incorporating iambic verse within contemporary topics and sentiments, Blevins demonstrates both the inadequacies and the magnificence of language in all of its forms. Mothers and children -- human, whale, and otherwise -- take center stage in this most personal and poignant play.
