←Recommendations of Literally Forever (Full Length Version)

Vampire romance?! Amazing. This play about a college student who falls for a vampire, asks to be turned into a vampire, and has to learn how to navigate the fallout is cute and sweet and funny and sad and surprising. Bonus points that it's easy to stage, with a small cast and simple sets. I love this take on vampire lore, with self-aware jokes and some twists on how we imagine vampires to be. Wholly original fun!

Leah can relate to Harmony's disappointment in not being "delicious enough to finish"! But audiences won't have the same reaction to Heyman's lesbian-vampire-rom-com as it will leave them "fangry" for more monster-lore building. My fav: "There’s no such thing as werewolves."

Right off the bat (ha ha): incredibly sexy, romantic piece. But that's the baseline, friends. Total admiration of how Heyman found some inventive ways to portray the vampire mythos, considering how worn the trope can be. That's not present here, though, as there's some surprising life affirmation coming from the undead. Whoda thunk it? A lot of good laughs as well. This expanded version from the original ten-minute fleshes things out nicely. Would love to see this staged!

[2025-05-18] I'm a sucker (get it? vampire play? Nevermind.) for plays that twist familiar stories into new shapes. Sam Heyman brings new life to the vampire myth with this queer love triangle that presents the creatures as much more sympathetic than they've been portrayed in the past. Sam has a gift for writing plays with more subtle conflict than the binary good-vs.-evil, and in "Literally Forever," the sympathies are always in flux. That dynamic, and the fantastic story, make this a delight.

I very much liked the lesbian vampire rom-com play.

Who knew that the greatest threat to an ancient immortal vampire would be a TERF-y ex-girlfriend with a centuries-old grudge?! This expanded version of Heyman's short play offers an astute, allegorical response to this fraught political moment, allowing audiences to see just what it means to be, quite literally, "stuck in the past." I love the metaphor that an infinite future is not only imaginable, but desirable, when you get to live as your authentic self! A romantic, supernatural romp!

When you blend romance and vampires, you're bound to generate a conflict that goes beyond the boundaries of either of those genres. In this story, Leah and Harmony find true attraction with the additional thrill of a life together forever. Add in a relentless vampire hunter who is a vampire themselves and you have the makings of a cracking good tale and an allegory for the world and its perceptions of Others. There's love and meaningful insight in this timeless tale.
