In a nightmarish near-future New York City, Shelley, a vibrant, sharp-witted karaoke emcee battling lifelong body dysmorphia and eating disorders, enrolls in an experimental drug trial that will transform her into a werewolf. The only catch: she must eat while on the drug. She reconnects with Rumi, a chef and former flame now heavier and haunted post-breakup, and they take each other roles’ as feeder and feedee (as well as f*ck buddies) — as they navigate bodies that no longer obey human rules, as if they ever did. Their volatile romance erupts into a collision of desire, monstrosity, and self-realization. MOONBODIES blends body horror, surreal puppetry, and biting humor to interrogate kink, shame, connection, and body politics.

Glad I didn't read the synopsis of this play. I feel like I don't get to read enough plays that truly surprise and blow all my expectations of how things will go after scene one completely out of the water. This play does that and it is one of the many reasons that I am glad that it exists. Another reason is that it explores the world of kink in the fat community is such an interesting and judgment-free way. Any yet another reason is that its a pure horror play that I can not wait to see fully staged.
