The dialogue completely pops off the page, flowing down like one great big twitter thread (back when that app was good). Trashy, bleak, and hopeful in equal measure - completely defies expectation. Gnat Frye is a writer to watch!

In Gnat Frye’s “failures in girlyear”, traditional narrative takes second seat to mood, tone, and multi-faceted dysfunctional relationship. When demi-internet-celeb puke girl (so named from the viral YouTube video she found herself featured in) returns to her collegiate stomping grounds, she is quickly absorbed into a community of comrade damaged souls (rabies girl, tape girl, job girl, etc.). But has she gotten there just in time to watch the lot of them self-destruct, or can she find a way to rescue even the most lost of them? Frye’s authorial voice is absolutely unique and always enthralling.

Failures In Girlyear isn't a script you read, per se, but rather one you feel. It does a tremendous job of using language to bring this delightfully uncomfortable and emotionally precise portrait of girlhood to life in a manner that I am confident would be just as vivid on stage as it is on page.

Raw and intense in a methodical and crafted way, this play hits the core of girlhood and humanity in general. Transgressive against the grain, it seeks to dismantle all aspects of the patriarchy, including language itself.

Transformative. Brilliant. Stunning.

A play about how virality can mess you up. Loved all the gross names and the gross talk and the girls getting to be GROSS! And vulnerable! And there for each other! The phrase "the transgenderity of it all" will be rotating in my head for the next week. Funny and sad and lovely!

This play is pure insanity in the best ways possible. Great roles for trans actors that isn't all about them being trans. No trauma to deal with. No coming out stories to tell. Just a play about a community of people that hurt and support each other. I loved how this play feels like it has its own language. I feel like this play would be awesome in an unconventional playing space. The lack of setting makes things go quickly and keeps us focused on the chaotic lives of these people.
