No Small Feet

(TEN-MINUTE PLAY) Ray is having trouble at his high school. A bully makes fun of him because he has a gay friend, but more so because he has big feet. A man dressed as a clown named "Clownie" (with very big clown feet), sees Ray sitting on the stoop of his building on a school day and they end up having a conversation about Ray's situation. "Instead of pulling a quarter from behind a kid's ear, this circus clown pulls a bit of hope out of a day that seemed hopeless. A very good play for a school or youth program that needs to show hope in a wry and somewhat comic disguise for the benefit of us who don't respond to that kind of "Up With People" relentless cheerfulness. A wink, a poke in the ribs, and a leg up from Clownie might be just what is needed.

Wasn't expected to be moved by a scene between a clown and a kid today, but here we are. Wonderful short piece of humanity here where Karp spreads a little hope and some good advice in between some very funny lines and a very funny situation. No easy feat. (Sorry.) Anyway, very enjoyable! this would be a very good addition to your ten minute festival!

When things are tough, perhaps all you really need is a clown. Ray has been the victim of schoolyard bullying to the point that he is becoming truant. Clownie is….a clown (of course) who see through to Ray’s pain and stops to do something about it. A charming and sweetly funny short play that gets to the heart of a serious issue. Sometimes Good Samaritans wear floppy shoes.
