When Ryan bursts into Colby’s apartment convinced he might be falling for someone, Colby panics, misreads the moment, and accidentally opens a door neither of them are ready to walk through. To help Ryan prepare for his first date in years, the two best friends begin “beta testing” romance. What starts as rehearsal quickly becomes real. While Ryan gets better at dating, Colby gets worse at pretending. Colby’s romance-novel fantasies bleed into the living room as both men begin feeling more than either meant to simulate, and each practice date pushes them closer to admitting what the audience already suspects: Colby loves Ryan, and Ryan loves Colby, he just doesn’t know it yet. Beta Testing is a queer romantic comedy about best friends, mistaken signals, slow realization, and the moment pretend feelings stop being pretend. It asks how long two people can rehearse love before they have to live it, and whether the scariest part of wanting something is finally getting it.

Beta Testing, a One-Act Romantic Comedy

Recommended by

  • Claire Wittman: Beta Testing, a One-Act Romantic Comedy

Cody Burke’s "Beta Testing" reads like a witty YA book hot off the presses, with homages to the romantic tropes that have delighted readers for centuries, from Jane Austen to "Icebreaker"--and an earnest love story at the very heart of the play! Especially well-suited to college-age and young adult actors, this play provides a perfect vehicle for one-act festivals, scene work, and monologues.
