A delightfully off-kilter view of romance and showbiz. Love the premise. Snappy dialogue moves this play along at an exciting pace, and the world created inside California Magic's lounge is one I'd love to see realized on stage.

I REALLY LOVED THIS ONE!!!! I enjoy when writers write for all ages and this was a great character piece with a lot of great dialogue and emotion.

Character Information

  • Terry Plum
Terry is a romantic in rhinestones, a man whose entire identity is laminated in the glitter of showbiz fantasy. Approaching 60 with a sense of profound dread, he is the architect and unwavering curator of "California Magic," a universe where Larry the Cable Guy is a legend and a free pass to the wax museum is a perk of the gods. His "happy-go-lucky" persona, the softie dad jokes, the gossip magazine sighs, is a carefully constructed performance to mask a deep well of insecurity about his age, his relevance, and his grip on a wife who is young enough to be his daughter. His love is genuine but smothering, expressed in sequinned costumes and namedrops of faded celebrities, a desperate attempt to build a permanent vacation from reality.

  • Tanya Plum
Tanya is a captive songbird in a scratchy, homemade cage. A former Mormon seeking freedom and glamour, she found both in Terry’s whirlwind promise of a "lounge act" life. Now, a few years in, the glitter has dulled to grit. She is acutely, painfully aware of their act's obsolescence, performing for a world that views them as background noise. Her restlessness is not a lack of love for Terry, but a suffocating claustrophobia within his meticulously crafted, aging dream. She is pragmatic where he is delusional, yearning for a life of "significance" while battling guilt over wounding the kind, if misguided, man who showed her a world beyond her upbringing. Her conflict is the heart of the play: the struggle between loyalty and self-preservation.
