  • Izolda Trakhtenberg: Love Songs From The Abyss

I love the water/emotion themes in this play. It's also a profound yet fun exploration of what it means to be in love. As someone who's been in many bands, it also strikes the right chords with respect to how bands work or don't work together in harmony. The creative process in bands is a collaborative one, and this play highlights that beautifully.

Delightfully quirky setup. A mermaid band. Reminiscent of the afternoon cartoons I grew up watching. This is a fun play about the creative process and the need to have allies on the battlefield of love and art.

What a wonderful story showing how creative collaboration can bring amazing results as well as bringing people (and mermaids) together. Collaborators may occasionally veer off in their own direction, but when everyone remembers what they’ve working towards, the harmony can be beautiful. This would be so much fun to see and hear.

Anyone who has ever tried to share their deepest thoughts and hopes in a song lyric will immediately get where Kieran Khanna is taking us. Harmonea, Coral, Finigan, and Reef all have skin (or is it scales; we're talking about merfolk here) in making their song and their message a success, so hearts go out to The Abyss, a band that really wants to get their message across. Yes, there are some silly moments, but that makes the it all the more true to the spirit of the tale. Or is it tail?

This one had me at the premise! Mermaids in a rock band? I cannot think of anything more charming... or more fun for a wardrobe department to take on! This play also has plenty of fun opportunities for actor-musicians to show off a bit, giving the piece texture - no two productions will ever be exactly alike, which is quite beautiful. Though ultimately silly, this piece is very tender. I hope sweet Harmonea finds her love, and the song finds a home in their heart!

Being an artist is HARD. Doubly hard when you're in a new band preparing for your first big gig, trying to write a killer love song. Kieran Khanna introduces us to The Abyss, a new group of mermaid musicians who show us just how hard it can be - especially when the lead singer/songwriter lacks the necessary experience to create the song. Good thing she has her friends. It all makes for an enjoyable time underwater.

01.05.25 - I think the thing I liked about this piece the most is that, despite the outlandish setting (Mermaids in a recording studio), there really is some substance here about why we create the things we do. In this case, a simple love song. Harmonea has her reasons for wanting it the way she wants and it's a damned solid reason. Well done Kieran.

I used to have mermaid dolls I played with in the pool and they, too were totally in a rock band. I can visualize this so well. The colors, the costumes will be so fun to execute. And I love that, honestly Harmonea wants to write a love song for herself. A song about not knowing love, but knowing love is something she wants in her life. This could be a new musical animated series. Watch out Jem and the Holograms!

An imaginative piece about collaboration and the creative process. A costumer would have a whale of a time with these characters! An enjoyable trip to The Abyss!

Mermaid band!! This short is a glimpse behind the curtain, watching the band come up with a new love song, and the ensuing band politics and drama. It’s fun watching how the sausage is made with this under the sea band!
