What an amazing opportunity for an ensemble cast and scenic designer. Extraordinary work.

There is so much power in photography to see what's captured beyond an image. And in DRIFTWOOD by Donald Loftus, there are such rich relationships and metaphors explored here through a camera and beyond one, too. As someone who also loves the artform, I really appreciated his skillful use of photography to collide with memory and form new meanings and interpretations. And the characters he's crafted here make us root for them at the same time as we challenge their past decisions.

A multi-layered memory play of enormous power and insight, and an eye-opening depiction of how childhood trauma can irrevocably impact adult lives and future relationships across successive generations. A unique and courageous work of art ... bravo!

A deeply moving play. Loftus uses a simple structural device of jumping between time points to illuminate character and the patterns that bind up lives. Everything reflects and recurs, showing the compounding effects of generational trauma. I am impressed by how smooth the transitions are and how we are never lost in the overall story line. This play has a huge heart, and I love how documenting through art points the way towards redemption or at least understanding. A wonderful achievement.

The intimacy of this play is palpable, as are the memories Donald Loftus portrays as we go back and forth in time in a kaleidoscope of places, images and photographs. The designers for this play will have so many opportunities to make them come alive, but the characters themselves bring so much to the telling of the tale. For those of us who have been through what Daniel is dealing with, it is both heart-rending but also uplifting in seeing how he finds his way to take the true portraits.

“You gotta find the soul others can’t see”. A gorgeous line in this beautiful memory play about facing one’s own death, owning our mistakes and coming to a place of forgiveness. Through the literal lens of Daniel, a professional photographer, we are granted insight into Daniel and his parents Gloria and Joseph. Secrets are revealed, regrets shared, as a portrait emerges of longing, loss, and change. I am so glad I got to read this moving play by master playwright Donald Loftus!

I read this play in one sitting, totally enraptured by the near letter perfect dialogue, the multi-layered story which had the effect of a parable, and characters who seemed so real as to rise from the page in all their full-blooded glory. Donald Loftus, with "Driftwood" (revised 2026), has wriiten a piece that will wrap itself around your heart and refuse to let go. I am looking forward to reading more work from this writer!
