  • Donald Loftus: . . . and Women Rule Over Them

An ambitious, provocative, and deeply engaging political drama that examines gender, faith, race, power, and democracy through the lens of a fiercely contested presidential election. Ken Love creates a compelling gallery of complex characters whose personal histories and political ambitions collide in ways that are both timely and unsettling. Rich with debate, the play challenges audiences to confront difficult questions about leadership, extremism, and the future of the American experiment.

In Ken Love's alternate 2024, all the presidential candidates are women--a Democrat Vice President thrust into the race at the last minute, a conservative Black Republican senator, and an extreme Christian Nationalist congresswoman. They are all experienced politicians, tough and driven, but in the heat of campaigning their public records may well be overshadowed by their past secrets and messy personal lives. A scary and fascinating examination of politics in the "interesting times" we live in.

Incredible. A tense, well-paced, and thought-provoking script that examines how women, especially Black women, in power and in the public eye are treated by the populace. Esther's drive, talent for speaking truth, and emotional candidness is refreshing and powerful, and Sarah's diabolical religious fervor and purpose-driven aggression is terrifying to witness. It would be a privilege to see this staged. Love's dialogue had me on the edge of my seat: laughing, gasping, and chuckling with anxiety.
