Recommendations of THE CLEAN PLATE CLUB, a 10-minute absurdist comedy

  • Paul Donnelly: THE CLEAN PLATE CLUB, a 10-minute absurdist comedy

The struggle is real for all of us with food issues. This comedy of fads and trends and temptations captures the external pressures and internal struggles faced by so many people. A serious issue is addressed deftly and with an engagingly light touch. Jenna's turn toward real help provides a hopeful conclusion.

Addiction comes in many forms. This hilarious play is at turns entertaining, truthful and moving in its depiction of one persons struggle with food addiction. It is also very hopeful in its resolution. Highly recommended !

  • Marj O'Neill-Butler: THE CLEAN PLATE CLUB, a 10-minute absurdist comedy

Oh, how food can control you! This short play has it all: an angel, a devil, and a dancing syringe. It's hard to be good when it comes to food, and I empathize with Jenna. This four-character short is sure to be a hit at festivals.

I mean, a play with the stage direction "how you imagine a glistening syringe might move" is going to have my admiration from the get go. Very funny piece by Rose, and it captures the current zeitgeist around body image, weight loss, and wellness very well. The hope that comes at the end is well deserved, and one prays that it will be permanent. In the meantime, following Jenna in her struggle with the voices in her head made manifest makes for a good 10-minute piece all around. Good stuff!

It's simultaneously fun and humbling to read a play that could be a scene from your life! If I had a nickel for every time I nodded my head in recognition while reading this incredibly theatrical, absurdly funny play, I'd jingle while I walked! Rose brilliantly personifies the many 'voices in women's heads' as they navigate a world that is once again becoming obsessed with thinness over balance and well-being. The physicality is spectacular. There's even a musical number! Read it and nod along!
