This is a fantasy that, in my opinion, reads/plays like a parable. And I love parables. And there's an all embracing morality tale hidden within this work that in no way feels preachy or heavy handed. Aly Kantor's "Because We Planted Flowers" involves a particular maligned group that is like nothing I've read before. Even if it does give a nod to C.S. Lewis' Narnia tales. Beautifully done, Aly!

Aly Kantor's coming-of-age tale is more than just that, though: It's a cultural critique, a message of empowerment, a story of friendship and love and respect. It is about not only recognizing a problem, but ultimately offering a solution.

This big-hearted fantasy story captures a painful and tender fork in the road, one that many people in our real world are experiencing at this cultural moment. When the love we have for the stories that shaped us is set in opposition to the love we have for our people, a choice has to be made. Aly Kantor writes with compassion and decency (and welcome humor) about the whole conundrum, and we’re the better for it.
