Recommendations of Boardwalk Concessions

  • Josh Gauthier: Boardwalk Concessions

There's some serious themes here that do get the recognition they deserve, but they're also wrapped up in the crunchy, deep-fried batter that is Sickles' comedic delivery. With laugh-out-loud moments and some key physical comedy, Sickles finds the human among the ferrets and boardwalk treats, delivering a piece that's equal parts heart and laughter.

  • Arthur M Jolly: Boardwalk Concessions

An absolute gem of a play. Strikingly funny, with an original and effective ploy with one character desperately waiting to bite into her corndog while it's hot... but far from being a comedic gimmick, that's only the catalyst for a rapid turn into a much deeper, soul-satisfying exploration of why relationships fail. Beautifully done.

  • Morey Norkin: Boardwalk Concessions

You just know from the outset that everyone in the audience will be anxiously wondering whether Kaden will take a bite of their corn dog. Just as one might savor the first bite of any boardwalk treat, you can find immense pleasure in this touching comedy as two somewhat clueless characters move toward self awareness. Theaters performing this play could make a fortune with a well-stocked concession stand!

  • Steven G. Martin: Boardwalk Concessions

A comic gem of a play of when the realization hits: It's not the world and all of society and your friends and loved ones and intimate relationships who misunderstand you, who don't get you. It's not them. It's on you.

From rant to realization, "Boardwalk Concessions" is a very satisfying character arc built in only a few minutes.

  • DC Cathro: Boardwalk Concessions

The dialogue in this snappy two-hander is just as yummy as the toxic deep-fried goodness that peppers this play. These characters are distinct, vivid, and hungry… literally for one of them. Scott Sickles had a flair for comedic dialogue and anti-heroes, and this short piece will whet your appetite for funny while giving actors beautiful opportunities to showcase conflict and friendship.

Apart from many other valid points raised in other recommendations of this great two hander, Scott explores the etiquette of 'should you eat while someone is talking?'! As an Englishman, I've been in that very predicament and not really known the answer because hunger sways my thoughts.
Oh and I love the fact that the support rodent hates him! Haha! Great.

Nobody can write an unhinged rant like Scott C. Sickles, and BOARDWALK CONCESSIONS features one of my favorites! This play contains a character on the precipice of emotional growth, teetering on the edge of deeper empathy and understanding.... and they just can't QUITE get there. But at least they can eat a corndog or funnel cake while they backslide into self-destructive behaviors.

The friendship is the kind that survives despite the significant character flaws of one party- and that's a rare and precious thing. Hilarious, sharp, surprisingly tender and sweet. JUST LIKE A CORNDOG!

  • Sam Heyman: Boardwalk Concessions

Scott Sickles is a master of nuanced, human communication - Boardwalk Concessions starts out as a silly scenario anchored around heartbreak, but it proceeds to develop its two central characters, Vesper and Kaden, and their flawed friendship in rich, unexpected ways. This play demonstrates how difficult it is to overcome ones shortcomings, even when they are obvious to those around you--and the way that learning a lesson does not absolve you immediately of your wrongs. What a lovely portrait of friendship for adult audiences.

Take a deep breath and dive into "Boardwalk Concessions" by Scott Sickles. Because this plays is a whirlwind and you won't have time to blink, let alone breath while Vesper rants about Mace and Kaden just tries to eat a Corn Dog. Punctuated with nuance and metaphor, this play is sweet and hilarious at the same time.

  • Philip Middleton Williams: Boardwalk Concessions

It could only happen in a play by Scott Sickles wherein two very different people who have, frankly, very little to brag about in terms of positive personal interaction skills could be friends... and breathtakingly co-dependent. Yet Vesper and Kaden have that kind of relationship that makes this moment of human comedy work so well. And one can only imagine what the jilted Vesper must be like to attract the now-departed lover Mace in the first place. No matter; it all works, and these two people need each other in the same way we need to share their story.
