Recommendations of Music and God

  • D. Lee Miller: Music and God

No, I have not reqd the prequel to this play, but taken alone, if you haven't gone to an old friend's wedding or even a high school reunion, this is what happens. But these are everybody's favorite 'friends' - the Peanuts crew! What a blast to find out what is happening with them - It is like a memory and event all at once. I just love this! Well done, Scott Sickles.

I loved Hillary Bluestein-Lyons's MARCIE AND PATTY ARE GETTING MARRIED, and Scott Sickles keeps the magic going with his sequel MUSIC AND GOD! A beautiful look at the Peanuts characters all grown up, this play is so incredibly heartwarming. With classic Scott Sickles flare, this play will have you snoopy dancing in the aisles!

Romance, love, familiarity - all during the reception to a wedding. I love how one character “doesn’t lust. No. He yearns!” And how the other two are praying/hoping for a dance.

After the hilarious chaos of Hilary Bluestein-Lyons’ Marcie and Patty Are Getting Married, Scott Sickles brings us to the wedding reception focused on another set of Peanuts characters and a more subdued mood aided by an open bar. Sickles manages to call up some vintage images from the comic strip adding to the overall charm of this piece. It is truly heartwarming to see Chuck as a somewhat functioning adult and that his two best friends, Linus and Schroeder, still have his back. I have to think Charles Schulz would be pleased.

A touching and delightful companion piece to Hilary Bluestein-Lyon's excellent "Marcie and Patty Are Getting Married." Scott extends the universe of grown-up Peanuts characters in surprising yet completely believable ways. I don't like to think of Charlie Brown and his gang all grown up, but if they must, these two funny and heartwarming plays do justice to the kids and the adults they might turn out to be.

If you haven't read Hillary Bluestein-Lyons's wonderful play MARCIE AND PATTY ARE GETTING MARRIED, please do so posthaste and then follow it up with Scott Sickles's beautiful companion piece, MUSIC AND GOD. I love the grown-up versions of the classic Peanuts characters. In both plays, they retain the genuine warmth from the comics but manage to believably age them into adulthood without cruelty or cynicism. MUSIC AND GOD features plenty of jokes, nods to the Peanuts universe, and a potential ending for Linus and Schroeder that I want to be true more than anything! Wonderful work!

Thank you, Scott, for writing this wonderful sequel to my play. I love that we get to see more of Schroeder and his story, and Linus and Chuck are much how I imagine they might be in their 20s. You added the Scott Sickles flair with finesse and heart.
