I've had plays produced in every state in the USA, England, Australia, Canada, Ukraine, Cape Town, South Korea, and Holland. I was Playwright in Residence for the Des Moines Playhouse for years -- and wrote a show a year for our professional children's theatre company, which we then toured across the Midwest.
I've written -- and written -- for high schools, and am proud of those plays -- I like working with that age group, and could always and immediately identify with the young people I was writing about -- because my inner adolescent hovers not quite below the surface.
I am published in Playscripts, Dramatic, French, and Pioneer Drama.
I've been commissioned -- and commissioned. The nadir, using drama to explain insurance to 56th graders. I added music and kept it lively -- and still have no idea of how insurance works -- nor do the students. And --a film, Six Ways to Fix Chicken, featuring a Woman and her chicken. They wanted it funny.
And the height: BATTLE CRY OF FREEDOM, about Midwesterners in the Civil War for Mr. Hal Holbrook, premiering at the Civic Center in Des Moines, IA, a huge barn of a place that we did sell out.
And: MILLIKEN'S BEND, written for Emmy Winning Actor, GregAlan Williams,a true story of the only battle in the Civil War in which black soldiers, newly freed slaves, and white soldiers, volunteers from the 23rd Iowa, fought side by side. The battle changed the way in which General Grant regarded black soldiers -- before he had allowed them only to dig tenches, set up tents, etc. After that battle, one of the fiercest of the war, and one of the bloodiest -- bayonets were used -- Grant allowed freed slaves to serve as soldiers.
And yadda, yadda, yadda.
My writing changed the day, the minute, I heard a brief segment on the mother of Jesse James on NPR. I knew I wanted to use the stage in a different way, I wanted to
write myth as reality and/or reality as myth, use magical realism, bend time. Give voice to women who have disappeared into the dark night of history -- and so THE TOTALLY TRUE COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY OF THE MOTHER OF JESSE JAMES was born. She was the inventor of the phrase, Alternative Facts, and must have taught P.T. Barnum all he knew. I followed that with ASHES, a ten minute piece on three people who have just been freed from a Nazi concentration camp and are hunting for a village that perhaps never existed -- or perhaps still does, in memory.
So my resume would include many good plays for teens, MAKIN' IT, WINNERS, family shows,THE BASEBALL SHOW, A LITTLE PRINCESS, quite a few fact shows based on historical facts -- one on the last person to see Anne Frank alive, THE STRENGTH OF THEIER SPIRIT, one on young immigrants, FACES OF FREEDOM. And TO SEE THE STARS, a love piece I would have written if no one had paid me a dime, the story of the first nationwide strike, led by girls in the garment factories, aged 13 - 18. I was inspired by the true story -- and also by the fact that my daughter, in then in high school, needed some heroines that were rnot the Kardashians or the Duggars. Two one man shows that have been touring -- touring, GRANT WOOD: PRAIRIE REBEL, and AMERICAN DREAMER: THE LIFE OF HENRY A. WALLACE,based on the prize winning biography of the same name by US Senator John Culver.
And the new plays -- that twist and turn reality into more than it is.

As our umpire says, this play's about baseball. Real baseball. The game of baseball, not the business. All you need for real baseball is a bat, a ball, a backyard, maybe a vacant lot. And the feeling that today's the day! For a home run, for stealing second, then sliding right under the catcher's glove to score the winning run. The feeling that anything's possible...that baseball feeling.

Some of us found a way to fight.
Some of us sang on our way to death.
Some of us could only hope.
All of us had a name.

So starts the powerful play, The Strength of Their Spirit, based on actual events and real people.

There are dark moments in the play -- but it leaves us with hope for the future, and a determination not to let such a thing happen again. As Rachel, Miriam's mother tells her, "Let your spirit soar like the gulls! In the strength of your spirit there is freedom!"

Interspersed in the play are actual poems written by young people also in hiding during the Holocaust.

It is a great favorite for one act play competitions.

TO SEE THE STARS, The Power Of SIsterhood

I was inspired to write TO SEE THE STARS when I read that the first nation wide strike in the US had been carried out by girl ages 13- 18. Nobody had included that in my history books.
Then, I realized that my daughter, about 14 at the time, needed some good, strong heroines to look up to -- or she might turn into a Kardashian wannabe.
So the play was born.
It's 1909 and the shirtwaist industry in New York is making profits of $50 million. But the young girls who work in the factories earn barely enough to live on, and their working conditions are brutal. When their pleas for help are rejected by the male-dominated union, the young girls who work at Johannsen's Shirtwaist Factory band together to fight for a better life. They endure beatings, starvation and even prison but ultimately prevail, as the shirtwaist girls win the first industry-wide strike in American labor history. However the girls' real victory is in changing the way they see themselves—not as victims, but fighters.

I also like to write good roles for women -- and this was a bonanza of good roles for young girls!!

Faces of Freedom is a vivid theatrical experience, using both an ensemble and monologues, to tell the true stories of the young immigrants of today, and yesterday. Moving fluidly from past to present and back again, the play interweaves Maria's journey to America in 1907, with Tron's escape from death and imprisonment as a Vietnamese boat person in 1978. Against this backdrop, we meet the newest imigrants: Halima, whose family fled the Taliban, Vida, who is trying to find the courage to cross the first city street she has ever seen. We get to know Juana, whose fast-food counter is her passport to a better world, and Carlos, whose skill with a soccer ball is his entry into a new school. Elena and Luis, a sister and brother from Mexico, are each inventing their own ways to cope with a suddenly unfamiliar life, while Semir, a young Bosnian boy, can only find peace of mind at Dunkin' Donuts. In seeing their stories, we see reflected our family's story of coming to America, and we learn, perhaps for the first time, the story of our newest neighbors, all of different cultures, facing risks and challenges, yet all of us united in our search for freedom. All of us Americans. Students have given this play a gratifying response: "After seeing this play, I could understand the new kids coming into our school and what they went through"; "…this play was funny and sad and made me think."

SIMPLE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SETS

With dialogue and stage action as dazzling as the emperor’s imaginary extravagant clothing, this charming adaptation will make your stage come alive with laughter and an important lesson-it’s the heart that makes the man, not the clothing. Princess Chenille is the only one in the royal family who knows that clothes can’t fix the kingdom’s problems. Poverty, hunger and neglect simply cannot be ’cheered up’ by silk or taffeta! The power-hungry prime minister, Count De Gauche, has convinced the emperor he should wed Princess Chenille, even though she cannot stand him and loves another. Luckily, the narrator (a servant in the castle who ends up playing a vital role in the story) comes up with a plan to postpone the wedding-a royal clothes contest for the emperor’s wedding outfit! You won’t forget the two ruffians posing as tailors as they weave their scheme with finesse, fervor, and invisible fabric! By the end of this down-to-earth story, the good-hearted (but slightly featherbrained!) emperor realizes the error of his ways, demotes the crooked Count De Gauche to work in the stables and welcomes Captain Herringbone Faircloth as Princess Chenille’s husband. Full of physical humor and dynamic, loveable characters, this script brings zip and zing to the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale.
