In 1784, near the end of Benjamin Franklin’s brilliant career as the United States’ Ambassador to France, King Louis XVI asked of him a small favor: serve on a commission of scientists to evaluate the work of a doctor practicing a strange kind of medicine in Paris. Franklin, near 80 and in poor health, wanted only to return home, but he agreed. In The Commission, Franklin tells us the story of what happened when he helped investigate Franz Anton Mesmer. What he discovered changed his life; what he helped to suppress might have changed the world. In so doing, he raised questions about the nature of mankind and freedom that he answered too late. Now as he awaits his death, he makes his confession.

The Commission is based on primary sources from the time, including the rare original reports of Franklin and his colleagues.
