While growing up in Boyle Heights, California, Anthony Aguilar would watch a slew of classic sitcoms, Bert and Ernie sketches, and hours upon hours of cartoons. This would help develop his strong love for comedy. He started studying theatre in high school and then went on to earn his Bachelors in Theatre Arts at California State University, Northridge. He also became very active in the world of community theater where he co-wrote his first full length play, “Little Red,” an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood with an all Latinx cast. He then went on to create “El Verde” which is a series of plays depicting a Latino superhero who is in search of his true power. Since then, he has continued to work in the field of theater for young audiences, either as a writer, performer, or behind the scenes, actively pursuing to spread the message of kindness, with of course, many laughs along the way. He was commissioned by Center Theatre Group’s The Shop initiative for his stageplays “Emma & the Suzies,“ and “Annazul”. “Emma and the Suzies” also received a workshop reading at the 2017 Austin Latino New Play Festival through Teatro Vivo. He has worked for Hulu’s “East Los High” (season 1) and Comedy Central’s “Key and Peele” (season 5). He is currently studying improv at the Groundlings and also teaches playwriting for Teenage Drama Workshop at Cal State Northridge.
