While growing up in Boyle Heights, California, Anthony Aguilar would watch a slew of classic sitcoms, Bert and Ernie sketches, and hours upon hours of cartoons. This would help develop his strong love for comedy. He started studying theatre in high school and then went on to earn his Bachelors in Theatre Arts at California State University, Northridge. He also became very active in the world of community theater where he co-wrote his first full length play, “Little Red,” an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood with an all Latinx cast. He then went on to create “El Verde” which is a series of plays depicting a Latino superhero who is in search of his true power. This would help develop his strong love for comedy. He started studying theatre in high school and then went on to earn his Bachelors in Theatre Arts at California State University, Northridge. He also became very active in the world of community theater where he co-wrote his first full length play, “Little Red,” an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood with an all Latinx cast. He then went on to create “El Verde” which is a series of plays depicting a Latino superhero who is in search of his true power. Not only does Anthony write the series but has been playing the title character for over ten years. Since then, he has continued to work in the field of theater for young audiences, either as a writer, performer, or behind the scenes, actively pursuing to spread the message of kindness, with of course, many laughs along the way. He was commissioned by Center Theatre Group’s The Shop initiative for his stageplays “Emma & the Suzies,“ and “Annazul”. “Emma and the Suzies” also received a workshop reading at the 2017 Austin Latino New Play Festival through Teatro Vivo. He has worked for Hulu’s “East Los High” (season 1) and Comedy Central’s “Key and Peele” (season 5). He is currently studying improv at the Groundlings and also teaches playwriting for Teenage Drama Workshop at Cal State Northridge.

Her school-devoted friends, the Suzies, aren’t as keen on rebelling and their friendship is put to the test. Emma then takes an interest in tagging, putting her mark all over...

Annazul

Annazul and her mama are street vendors in Boyle Heights, California. Together, they sell raspados (snow cones) of all different flavors, including one of their own creations named after Annazul herself. Mama has taught her daughter the important lesson of respecting their customers and respecting their work and Annazul loves the time she spends with her. But, all of that changes when she enters middle school...

Annazul and her mama are street vendors in Boyle Heights, California. Together, they sell raspados (snow cones) of all different flavors, including one of their own creations named after Annazul herself. Mama has taught her daughter the important lesson of respecting their customers and respecting their work and Annazul loves the time she spends with her. But, all of that changes when she enters middle school and the other children tease her for her career. Embarrassed, Annazul wishes for her mama to no longer sell raspados. Enter, Victor Victrola, a mystical figure who appears to have traveled from the late 1800’s and wanting to fulfill Annazul’s wish. But Annazul does not get exactly what she is hoping for, as Victor Victrola magically takes away all of mama’s customers and sells the Raspado de Annazul for himself. Victrola offers to undo the wish for a fee leaving Annazul to sell any way she can, even by breaking her mama’s code of respecting her customers. In the final confrontation, Annazul challenges Victrola to sell to her school bullies. She is finally able to defeat Victrola by staying true to the values mama has taught her, winning back her customers and being proud of her career.
