In the thick of the Civil War, a young slave, Robert Smalls, became a national hero by stealing a Confederate gunship from Charleston Harbor and sailing his family to freedom. He would meet Lincoln, persuade him to allow black soldiers to fight, and serve five terms in congress. This play sets the thrilling story to the music of traditional spirituals, with suspense, adventure, romance, comedy, cannon fire, and the attack on Fort Sumter. This true story of black heroism can in fact be done with seven actors and no musicians, as spirituals are traditionally sung a cappella. Cast of seven. Since the songs are traditional and can be found with a simple internet search, I have not provided any recordings of the music.

Libretto co-authored with Zhilian Liu. Magic, sweetness and comedy abound in this ancient Chinese fairy tale about an earnest young scholar who saves the life of a wolf, only to have Mr. Wolf propose to repay the debt by eating him. A talking tree and an ox who relishes the thought of being eaten herself, both agree the wolf should eat the man—but the scholar’s plucky pet Monkey doesn’t. Meanwhile, the God of Love and Marriage (the old man who lives under the moon) doesn’t think the scholar is much of a catch, so meeting his dream girl will be a challenge. The singing chickens and the donkey are very nervous, but the beautiful maiden May May and her father, The Old Farmer, have more mettle, in this musicalization of an important Chinese fairy tale from 476 BC, "The Wolf of Zhongshan."
