Five estranged siblings, Barb, Joyce, Robin, Scott, and Jo, return to their recently deceased mother’s house. They must prepare for her funeral, and Barb is shouldering that burden, endlessly trying to coordinate flowers, eulogies, and other logistics while also cleaning her mother’s house. Her unresolved guilt from not visiting her mother the day she died continues to haunt her. The rest of the siblings commence sorting and cleaning the duplex, which is filled with items their mother hoarded. Joyce reflects on who she is become since moving away, and who her siblings still believe she is. Robin and Scott argue about who will give the only eulogy at their mother’s funeral, as specified in her will. Scott, a mama’s boy, wants to give it, while Robin wants the opportunity to tell attendees about who her mother really was - a selfish, manipulative, and toxic person. Jo, the youngest sibling who was conceived from an affair and the reason the oldest four’s father abandoned them, desperately tries to communicate and help her siblings, but reaches a breaking point. Filled with grief, trauma, childhood memories, and of course a lot of dolls, “Mama Bushwick is Dead” explores the complex family dynamics present regardless of place and time.
