Suddenly, and for no reason, Silvia transforms into a fox. Richard takes her home, terrified he'll be thought crazy. He shoots the dogs and dismisses the staff and begins his new life alone with her. He tries to keep her indoors to avoid hunts, traps, and the cold. At first she is very much just a human in a fox's body, but gradually she becomes more and more a fox. She chases ducks, kills a rabbit, and eventually even plays dead in an effort to escape from her husband. In anguish, he lets her go and while he falls into a depression, she has kits with a dogfox. One day Richard sees her running from a fox hunt, she darts away from the hunt, but Richard never sees her again.
