Hi There!
I'm Max. I am a playwright, director, and pole dancer from Orlando, Florida. I hold a both a BA in Writing & Rhetoric and Rhetoric & Composition from the University of Central Florida, and I am an MFA Dramatic Writing candidate at the University of Idaho. As you can see, I have always been a writing student, but I really began to write plays during 2020, spurred on from a local contest that would bring forth my play "La Medéa." I am not afraid of cross-cultural theatre, multilingual theatre, adaptations of Greek drama, and finding the magic in everyday life. In every script of mine, there is a tell-tale logic in my dialogue, since I believe every character has their own way of thinking. Welcome to my niche!

Admetos has known this day would come for quite some time: the day his wife is doomed to die in his place. This is the arrangement that came about when Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deva of good fortune and the remover of obstacles, came to Admetos’ home in Jamaica Estates, Queens, under the disguise of a servant. When Yamarajah, the deva of death, came to claim the soul of Admetos, Lord Ganesha worked a deal on his behalf to satisfy death by some other measure. The only suitable replacement was Admetos’ wife Alcestis.
After the Chorus of Aunties enters and recounts the hardships struggled by the patriarch Ajah Pratesh, Admetos’ father, as he and his wife immigrated from Guyana over thirty years ago, Alcestis returns to bid a final farwell to the family, including their teenaged daughter Ehimaya. She asks that her husband maintain her living memory and not marry again; however, Admetos takes these vows a step further by swearing off any more celebration or entertainment of guests in his home.
These solemn oaths to his beloved are unwittingly challenged once a mysterious stranger arrives while Admetos is preparing for a sacred ritual to honor Alcestis. He reveals himself to be the Avatar Parashurama on sojourn and looking for a place to rest. At the feet of a holy man, Admetos is compelled to break his vow and invite Parashurama into his home as a guest, calling upon his daughter to tend to him.
As the day grows on and Alcestis has died, the family begins to mourn and make the final preparations for her cremation. Admetos is left behind to take care of some final measures when Ajah Pratesh comes to aggravate the situation. Admetos storms off, and Parashurama learns the true identity of the person who has died. When the grief comes to a head to high to bear for Admetos, Parashurama delivers one final courtesy in gratitude of Admetos’ hospitality: his wife, newly restored to life.

One day in Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC, wailing plagues La Botanica de Medéa, a Dominican Vudú shop. The shopkeeper laments how the home of its patroness Medéa has been disgraced by the abandonment of Jason, her now ex-husband. Having gone off and married the daughter of the Queens borough president, she and her sons have been left with next to nothing. The Chorus of Medéa’s vuduïstas pray for some divine intervention from the Dominican loas in response to this betrayal.

As the day goes on, the shop is frequented by several guests. The first, a visit from Jason’s fiancé herself, spells trouble for the entire shop. She issues an eviction notice signed by her father ordering Medéa and her sons to vacate by the next day. Next, a visit from Jason rubs salt in the fresh wounds of his infidelity, as he fails to realize the magnitude of his choices. Lastly, the shop is visited by a group of Manhattan socialites who need some “spiritual guidance” in their love lives. One of these women in particular, Magdalena finds herself in the unique position of being able to offer Medéa some refuge in exchange for her help. After she accepts, there are only two lose ends that Medéa needs to tie up.

Calling upon the powers of the loas, she anoints a golden necklace and silk robe. She summons Jason under the guise of her concession to her eviction and desire to make amends, sending Celiana to take her sons to what would be their new home with him. Not too long afterward, Celiana returns to give a gruesome account of the downfall of Jason’s fiancé, which also took the life of the borough president as collateral damage.

After night has fallen, Jason returns to a now empty shop to attempt to bring justice to his former wife.
However, he is truly decimated when he finds that Medéa has released her sons’ spirits to the loas, packing up her suitcase and moving on to the next chapter of her life…leaving Jason forever tormented in the past.
