Monologue. F, age 17. I wrote this monologue for a Women in Theatre class in Grad School. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651 – 1695) was a proto-feminist nun, writer, and scholar in Mexico or “New Spain.” She was an extremely brilliant child who mastered languages, philosophy, theology, and science in a time where girls were not allowed to attend university or receive a formal education. Word got around of her intellectual prowess, and at about age 17 (before the entered the convent), she was summoned by the local viceroy to test her intelligence. He invited many theologians, scientists, and scholars into a meeting to question her — unprepared — on a variety of topics. She nailed it, and impressed all the men. This monologue drops us in to the top of that meeting. And also I got an A+ on this assignment.
