Thelen’s comedy Pie in the Sky premiered on stage at the Victory Theatre in Los Angeles where it was an L.A. Times Critics Choice production. The piece was subsequently made into a multi-award-winning independent feature film starring K Callan and Laurie O’Brien. His comic opera Pyramus and Thisbe premiered in New York at the 92ND Street Y, and his musical The Third Wave premiered at the Columbia Entertainment Company where it received the Jackie White Memorial Playwriting Award. In addition to numerous articles on the musical theatre, he is the author of the book The Show Makers: Great Directors of the American Musical Theatre (published by Routledge). He is the former Literary Manager and Producing Associate for Goodspeed Musicals and was most recently the Playwright-in-Residence at the Ivoryton Playhouse.

Charlie Bump is so disillusioned with modern-day America (with its mass shootings, corporate greed, discrimination, and governmental dysfunction) that he decides to leave the only home he’s ever known and emigrate to another country in hopes of finding a better future for himself and his son. Pie in the Sky is the story of two women, Dory (65), and her mother, Margaret (85), who live together in a mobile home in Abilene, Texas. On this particular morning, Mama has awoken early with the over-whelming need to bake an apple pie. When Dory is awoken by the noise, she joins her mother, and together they assemble the pie and chat. The conversation starts out innocently enough, but it soon becomes clear...

Khaki Chums - a Christmas play with carols - is based on the unofficial Christmas Day truce that took place between British and German soldiers during World War I. The play takes place on Christmas night, 1914. When young British soldier Timmy McDougall runs from the trenches onto the battlefield to escape the misery of war, he is surprised by Bamey Luntz, a young German soldier. The two peacefully set their weapons aside in honor of the holiday. Soon, British and German soldiers from both sides leave their trenches and embark upon a ceasefire in which they sing carols, exchange gifts, and share stories. As the morning sun begins to rise, the soldiers reluctantly return to their trenches to resume the war.
