"Finding the Root" follows Mr.Feinman’s 8th grade Algebra I class over the course of an exam. The class files in their distinct friend groups gossiping about their classmate, Sam, who apparently discovered the test online and shared it with most of the class the night before. The class begins the test and are shocked to discover that it has been replaced with a different, much more difficult one. Each student has their own character moments over the course of the play: one deals with her anxiety, another schemes to get a better role in the school play, and yet another struggles facing her dog’s forthcoming death. The extra credit question reveals that the teacher was aware of the attempted cheating on the test and offers the class a choice. They can either guess the percentage of the class that cheated, or confess to being part of the cheating. If they confess, however, their grade becomes the percentage of kids who admit that they cheated. Sam calls this practice out as horribly cruel and immature, and the students ultimately rally around him, with all but one confessing to cheating regardless of whether or not they did.
