Mail Order opens on a mining cabin in rural Kentucky on the wedding night of Lena and Antoni, two Czech immigrants. The couple have only known each other for a few hours, as it is an arranged marriage, and have primarily communicated through letters. Lena has just arrived from Moravia and speaks no English, a mail-order bride, while Antoni has been in the country for many years. When Lena steps into the cabin, she quickly realizes that Antoni is not the wealthy landowner he claimed to be in his letters and that she has nowhere to go. The play explores issues of oppression, power, worker exploitation, and what drives us to dehumanize others.
