Hardly the demure spinster of our collective imaginations Jane Austen was born in 1775 in Georgian England, a lively and robust period of history. Austen’s epistolary novella Lady Susan was written in 1795, an unpredictable time of upheaval and transition. In this adaptation the newly widowed Lady Susan Vernon has fallen on hard times but is determined to restore her broken fortunes at the expense of everyone around her. Manipulative, callous and cruel the notorious coquette conducts a clandestine affair with a handsome married rake as she concocts schemes to force her own daughter Frederica into an unwanted marriage. - All the while siphoning funds from relatives, seducing unsuspecting young men and ordering a fashionable new wardrobe in the latest “antique” style. the script is factually researched with a nod to the Royal Post and late Georgian theatrical traditions. Indeed, Lady Susan Or the Captive Heart, A Jane Austen Bodice Ripper is structured in the manner of a Sheridan comedy, which enlivens Austen’s early work delineating her characters and revealing a rollicking, ribald tale fully accessible to contemporary audiences. Literature’s greatest villainess is about to take center stage.
